A licensed therapists is someone who has completed all of the requirements from the state to practice therapy. On the other hand, an intern is someone who has finished school and a practicum, and is now getting hours before being licensed. They meet with a Qualified Supervisor weekly who oversees their work.
Why take a chance on an Intern?
Something that a license does not take into account a person's additional training and experience. An intern could very well have worked in the mental health field for years before deciding to become an therapist or have lived-experience that understand our clients in ways that only "you had to be there to understand" knows. Additionally, internships can last anywhere from 1-5 years. So, a client could get an intern who in fact has more experience than a freshly licensed therapist. This is not to disparage the many skilled and qualified graduates, but to point out that there are some qualities that make an excellent therapist besides book knowledge or a license.
BOTH/AND.
At Invictus Counseling LLC, BOTH book knowledge AND experience is valued. We like to support our therapists gifts and experiences with education. Every new therapists, licensed and intern, is required to complete two Foundational Trainings. The Foundational Trainings are evidenced-based trainings that will enhance their knowledge and expertise in their given area of focus.
Some therapists are generalist and some are specialist. Generalist treat many different diagnoses, and tend to, but not always, use talk therapy as their main approach to therapy. On the other hand, specialist focus their practice by diagnosis and/or treatments.
We are specialist. While we do talk therapy as well, our training allows us focus on alleviating the specific symptoms of anxiety and trauma. Being a specialist, the approaches I use get right to the core of the issues you may be experiencing. (See ANXIETY SPECIALIST tab on top of page)
